Job Summary
The Lead, Storage and Backup Administrator will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operations of UCSF storage and backup systems. The Lead will provide senior expertise to the Storage and Backup team in executing daily operations, including installing, configuring, and operating storage and backup systems, as well as migration of storage solutions to the cloud. The Lead, Storage and Backup Administrator will coordinate partnership with a broad range of customers, partners, and key University stakeholders to provide best-in-class storage and backup solutions.
This role will drive the designing, provisioning, monitoring, upgrading, and capacity planning for the storage and backup environment, as well as provide technical expertise for day-to-day operations, ensuring optimized performance and compliance with data security and University policies. The Lead, Storage and Backup Administrator will manage urgent and complex issues by setting customer expectations, coordinating implementation plans, and being available as required and professionally communicating to all parties involved. The Lead also assists the implementation of storage and backup policies and solutions aligned with the broad Platform Services goals.

The Lead, Storage and Backup Administrator will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University's mission. The Lead will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.our placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The Platform Services team within Infrastructure Services is committed to empowering the academic, medical, and research mission of UCSF by ensuring that all customers have seamless, secure, and accessible technological support. The team oversees the management and maintenance of various technology platforms, including system and cloud services, to guarantee they are secure, readily available, and performing optimally. Platform Services handles the management of critical software, such as Epic, ensuring it supports the highest level of medical service delivery by operating at peak performance. The team also oversees data center operations, including server management, storage, and networking equipment, to ensure the reliable delivery of health services. Additionally, it manages databases with a focus on data security, availability, and top-tier performance. All these tasks are critical not just for the smooth operation of the University's technological infrastructure, but also for enhancing productivity, enabling the provision of high-quality health services and learning, and ultimately, improving patient and student outcomes.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • 5+ yrs experience working in 1 or more of the following fields: storage administration, information technology, or network operations.
  • Demonstrated exp.in information technology, platform services, or storage and backup administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience working in SAN, NAS, DASD, fiber channel, and cloud storage environments. Proven exp. provisioning, migrating, and utilizing cloud storage.
  • Advanced knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs. Extensive experience planning for future storage needs across a business application community in a collaborative way.
  • Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience in delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities.
  • Significant exp. working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
  • Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
  • Extensive experience designing and troubleshooting across the entire storage and backup path from the host to the SAN/NAS, Block, Cloud storage devices and across complex network topologies. Extensive experience with hypervisors (e.g., VMware), Windows, Linux, and Unix.
  • Proven experience publishing performance reports and recommending enhancements or modifications to the environment to meet future storage needs.
  • Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines.
  • Ability to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
  • Advanced understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users, and dependent/related functions.
  • Advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems.
  • Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex systems being supported.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to triage and escalate to leadership and management for resolution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate technical information and ideas to diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects.
  • Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues. Familiarity with budget planning and management, business case development, and service management.
  • Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Ability to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity.
  • Experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
